The main cause of periodontal disease is bacteria, in the form of plaque, which accumulates around the teeth. If plaque is not removed on a daily basis it begins to calcify and eventually it strongly gets attached to teeth and roots. This buildup can lead to the deterioration in the supporting tissue and bone that stabilize and protect your teeth, resulting in "pockets" around the teeth. If the resulting pockets are not treated, they become deeper, providing an increasingly larger space for bacteria to proliferate leading to a dangerous loss of gum tissue and bone and, potentially, tooth loss.
Our Doctors may recommend Periodontal Surgery to eliminate the pockets that create an environment impossible for you and your hygienist to properly clean your teeth and maintain your oral health.
During periodontal surgery the gum tissue is accessed and bacteria thoroughly removed. Then, depending on the bone architecture your doctor will reshape the bone, add bone graft and/or apply growth factors to stimulate regeneration of bone and build periodontal support before securing the tissue back into place.
