Expert Cosmetic Gum Treatment

A beautiful smile depends not only on having bright, straight and healthy teeth but also on having gums that are properly portioned and symmetrical. Cosmetic gum treatment includes the procedures for reshaping the gumline around your teeth and lengthening the amount of exposed tooth when needed.

Dr. Ovadia and Dr. Tanur are skilled experts at providing cosmetic gum treatment. They have many ways of enhancing the beauty of your smile and preserving the health of your gums.

Conditions we can fix with Cosmetic Gum Treatment

Here are some of the conditions we can correct with cosmetic gum treatment:

  • A “gummy smile,” which occurs when the the gums cover too much of the teeth and make your teeth appear short
  • An uneven gumline
  • A crown of a tooth that is too short for a dental restoration to be placed
  • A tooth that has never erupted through the gums or descended to its proper place in the dental arch. This leaves a missing tooth in the dental arch and adversely affects the bite.

Correcting a “Gummy Smile”

When your teeth look as though they are too small, it is likely because they are covered with too much gum tissue, resulting in what is called a “gummy smile.” Our doctors can perform crown lengthening whereby excess gum tissue is gently removed so that your teeth, rather than your gums, are the highlight of your smile.

Recontouring an Uneven Gumline

An uneven gumline can make your teeth look lopsided or make your teeth appears as though they are different shapes. Our doctors can reshape the gumline around your teeth to its proper size and shape so that your smile is aesthetic and symmetrical.

Functional Crown Lengthening

When a tooth has been worn down, or is decayed, and a restorative crown needs to be placed, there needs to be enough of the natural crown that is exposed to allow for the placement of the crown without cutting into the gumline and causing irritation, bleeding or pain.

To ensure that there is enough of the natural crown exposed to place a dental restoration without complications, the doctor will gently remove some of the gum tissue and lengthen the exposed crown surface. This will allow the restorative crown to be securely and safely placed.

Dr. Ovadia or Dr. Tanur may also lengthen the natural crown to expose and treat a cavity that has formed below the gumline.

Minimally Invasive Treatment to keep you comfortable

For most cosmetic gum procedures, the doctors use a dental laser or a radiosurgery device to reshape the gum tissue. These instruments gently cut gum and other soft tissues, and the incisions heal much faster compared to those made with standard surgical instruments.
